woman in red

"Red Color" is the code name for an alarm that warns of an emergency situation, usually following missile attack on civilian areas in Israel. The "Women in Red" exhibition was created as part of a workshop by the "Hosen" (Resilience) Center in Sderot in 2016, in which eleven women affected by trauma, employees of the Sderot Municipality, participated. The exhibition was produced by the Hosen Center in Sderot, Sderot Municipality, and the Cinema South Festival.

The collaboration between these organisations created an extraordinary exhibition that presented staged photographs of the women inspired by their personal stories. Concurrently, the exhibition featured monologues in which these women tell their stories related to femininity and war. The titles of the works in the exhibition are quotes from these monologues:
"Suddenly I see my kitchen as if covered in powdered sugar" (Orly)
"Who am I protecting? Maybe just the baby, and the older one will manage to run on his own?" (Adina)
"How will I look in a year? Maybe my legs will hurt? Maybe I'll have a hump?" (Yafa)
"You want to protect the children but you can't, you don't know how..." (Devorah)
"I can scream in amok, my whole body shaking" (Yvette)
"What were you thinking when you proposed to me with the view of Gaza?!" (Shenhav)

The project was initiated by Hagar Saad and Oshri Hayon, and curated by Dr. Orna Orien.

"Woma in Red" was part of the South Cinema Festival, Sderot (2017) and exhibited at Photo Israel Sixth International Photography Festival, Tel Aviv (2018).
